Corns & Calluses
What Are Corns and Calluses?
Corns and calluses are common skin conditions characterised by thickened, hardened areas of skin. While they’re not usually serious, they can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful and can impact your daily life.
Callus occur over larger areas of the foot, corns are smaller and more concentrated in nature and often more painful.
Corns and calluses develop due to:
- Pressure and Friction: Repetitive rubbing or pressure on the skin from activities like walking, running, or wearing tight shoes.
- Bony Deformities: Conditions like hammertoes or bunions can contribute to their formation.
- Improper Footwear: High heels, uncomfortable shoes, or ill-fitting footwear exacerbate the problem.
At NK Active our team of professional Podiatrists are here to help.
We start with an initial appointment, including taking a full history and examination to help work out why the corns and callus are present. At the initial appointment, we will treat the corns and callus, however, we may recommend an intensive treatment plan of 3-4 sessions over a 6-12 week period to help resolve the pain lesions.
We have a pressure mat available in clinic which can identify peak areas of loading. Other treatments can include footwear fitting service, foot orthoses (also known as insoles) to help reduce the load through the feet and reduce the risk of the painful lesions coming back.
Moisturising your feet on a regular basis can also be beneficial.
