3D Gait Analysis Romsey

We’re proud to offer expert gait analysis services in Romsey. You have most likely heard of a running gait analysis or a walking gait analysis. What exactly is this? Your gait is simply how you walk and run – the biomechanical movement of your body – we see patients all the time with aches and pains triggered by exercise that prevent them from being active and some of these injuries can be as a result of their own gait.

Strength Testing & 3D Gait Analysis

You have most likely heard of a running gait analysis or a walking gait analysis. What exactly is this? Your gait is simply how you walk and run – the biomechanical movement of your body – we see patients all the time with aches and pains triggered by exercise that prevent them from being active and some of these injuries can be as a result of their own gait.

NK Active are one of the first to use 3D gait analysis in clinical practice and the only clinic in Hampshire to have Run3D. 3D gait analysis is a state-of-the-art diagnostics tool that uses 3D motion cameras and sensors to scientifically analyse the way you run or walk, so no more guessing on what we think is happening.

It is the same technology used to make films like “Planet of the Apes”.

Is 3D Gait For Me?

After the initial assessment, we will marker you up with 39 reflective markers from hip to foot and build a lower limb skeleton of you. You are given time to get used to the treadmill before we start to collect the data.

This may include different speeds, different shoes, with or without insoles (orthoses) or even connect you to a heart rate strap monitor to see what happens as you get fatigued.

The data is real-life feedback that can highlight balance issues, muscle weakness, increased motion in a certain area or an error in your technique – all of which can lead to or explain your injury and help us build your treatment plan.

We quite often combine strength and flexibility testing with the 3D gait analysis data to get the complete picture of lower limb function, strength and flexibility.

This really helps get a good idea of lower limb function. Some of our patients have described the process as being like a MRI of how you walk or Run.

Not everyone will need a 3D gait analysis, sometimes the 18,000 bits of data it provides is over kill.

We have a set criteria in clinic used during your assessment; typically people who have a history of on-and-off injuries or multiple injuries down one side of the lower limb can really benefit from a 3D Gait analysis.

The NK Active 3D Gait Lab

Our gait lab is located in our Pepper Mill Barn clinic on the outskirts of Romsey. Unfortunately the equipment is not portable and so the 3D gait analysis can only be carried out at this location. We can combine appointments, so that if you have to travel quite a distance we can do everything in one visit. For example, combining an initial appointment, gait analysis and a review appointment to go through the results all in one visit.

Benefits and Outcomes of 3D Gait Analysis

3D gait analysis takes the guesswork out, using state-of-the-art 3D infrared cameras and reflective markers, just like the Hollywood films. Whether you’re an athlete managing repeat injuries or someone who just wants to walk more comfortably, the insights it provides can make a real difference.

It helps identify subtle imbalances or movement issues that may be contributing to pain, injury or poor performance and often combine this with strength testing as well. With this data, we can design a tailored rehabilitation or strengthening plan to improve your movement, reduce injury risk and support long-term recovery. For many patients, the results also lead to better footwear choices, orthotic prescriptions, or training adjustments to help them move more efficiently and pain-free.

3D Gait Analysis FAQs

Gait analysis reveals how your joints move, how your body weight is distributed, and whether there are any imbalances, inefficiencies or patterns that may contribute to injury. It can help explain why pain keeps returning – especially in the hips, knees, ankles or feet.

A full 3D gait analysis appointment typically takes around 60–90 minutes depending if we are combining strength testing at the same time. This includes a motion capture session on the treadmill and a discussion of your initial results. We often combine appointments to save you time, especially if you’re travelling to our Romsey clinic.

For most people, one comprehensive assessment is enough to guide treatment or rehabilitation. However, if you’re actively working on improving performance or recovering from a long-term issue, a follow-up session in a few months can help track progress and fine-tune your plan.

By identifying exactly how your body moves and where it’s compensating or overloading, gait analysis helps us create a targeted plan to correct imbalances and strengthen weak areas. The result is smoother, more efficient movement, lower injury risk, and better overall performance.
