Our Services

What Are Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are medical devices worn inside your footwear to support, guide and optimise the way your feet function.

Unlike standard insoles, our orthotics are designed using detailed clinical assessment and manufactured in-house using 3D printing technology. This allows us to precisely match the shape, structure and function of your feet, as well as your lifestyle and activity demands.

They are not simply about cushioning. They are used to influence movement patterns, reduce excessive strain and improve overall biomechanics.

Types of Orthotics We Offer

We provide a range of options depending on your needs:

Modified Off-the-Shelf Orthotics

These can be a simple and effective short-term solution. They are often available at your initial appointment and can provide immediate support.

Fully Bespoke 3D Printed Orthotics

These are designed specifically for your body, footwear and activity level. They can be refined over time and are suitable for more complex or long-standing issues.

We have recorded a video explaining the process and also describing the difference between off-the-shelf and custom foot orthoses.

FAQ

You can get orthoses to fit any shoe, but it depends on the orthoses and the shoe relationship.

Sometimes a prescription may need amending but if your orthoses are working well and you are doing everything that you want to do, it is unlikely that you will need to change them. As they say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

With bespoke orthoses and off-the-shelf orthoses, we will keep the prescription on file so that a repeat order can be made at anytime.

Why Choose NK Active for Custom Orthotics?

We prioritise education and transparency, helping you understand when orthotics are beneficial and when other approaches may be more appropriate.

Important Considerations

Custom orthotics are not always required and are rarely the only solution.

In many cases, they are used alongside strengthening, mobility work and movement retraining to achieve the best long-term outcome. Some patients use them temporarily, while others benefit from longer-term support depending on their condition.

Our role is to guide you towards the right approach for your situation.

Orthotics FAQs

Most custom orthotics last 2–5 years, depending on how often you wear them, the type of materials used, and your activity level. We recommend a review if your symptoms return or your shoes start to wear unevenly.

Not always. Orthotics can be a temporary tool to help manage pain or improve function during rehab. Some people need them long-term, especially for structural foot conditions, while others can reduce use over time as strength and mobility improve.

We design orthotics to fit into most day-to-day footwear, including work shoes, trainers, and walking boots. If you wear a variety of shoes, we can adjust the shape and size or recommend multiple pairs to suit different styles.

Some people experience mild discomfort or pressure when first adjusting to orthotics – especially if they’re correcting long-standing movement issues. This usually settles within a few days. We’ll guide you on a gradual wear-in schedule to help with the transition.

If you experience persistent foot, leg or lower back pain, or notice poor posture, uneven wear on your shoes, or discomfort during walking or exercise, it may be worth seeing a podiatrist. We’ll assess your movement and advise whether orthotics could help.
