Verruca
Verrucae
Verrucae are common, and they are not always painful. However, if they are under a weight bearing aspect of the foot, they can be extremely uncomfortable to live with. Verrucae are part of the HPV virus (human papillomavirus) and are essentially a wart of the foot. The key to any verruca treatment is to try and cause an immune response within your body. Essentially, your verruca will not settle until your body knows that it is there.
Did you know that there are about 7 different types of verrucae that can occur on the foot? Treatments can include over the counter products such as Bazuka, or freezing, although in general these have quite a low success rate. Other treatments involve needling, which is under a local anaesthetic, whereby we needle the verruca and introduce the verruca tissue into the bloodstream to help create an immune response. Another treatment option is Swift Microwave therapy, and we offer this in clinic at NK Active. This involves heating the verruca up quickly by 10 degrees, to create some vibrations within the water molecules to help trigger an immune response. After 3 treatments, the success rate is around 76%, increasing up to 82% after another couple of treatments.
Verrucae in children do not always have to be treated. Generally, if they are not causing any discomfort, then we leave them alone. Appointment wise we start with our Verruca Assessment appointment, in which we will examine the potential verrucae and then come up with a treatment plan that is right for you.
Verrucas
What are verruca?
Verruca is a form of the human papillomavirus (HPV), that occurs mainly on the soles of the feet and around the toe area, however, can occur anywhere on the body and we call it a wart.
Â
The virus thrives in moist environments, such as, changing room floors. They are contagious through direct person-to-person, for example, by simply walking barefoot across the same floor as someone with a verruca could cause you to contract the virus.
Â
Verrucae are characterised by small ‘cauliflower-like’ growths with tiny centralised black dots, people often think that the black dots are the root, however, these are micro blood vessels.
Can they resolve on their own?

We are really excited to offer Swift verruca treatment at our Pepper Mill Barn, Romsey clinic.
Â
We know that verrucae can be stubborn, and often painful, and the older we get the harder they can be to treat. Quite often people have tried over-the-counter treatments and they have not worked.
Â
Swift microwave treatment has over an 80% success rate, the highest success rate published for non-surgical treatment of verrucae.
