There is an interesting saying about changing the things you can change and accepting the things you can’t change.
So, if we can’t cure arthritis there is no point doing anything, right?
Wrong, very wrong there is every point doing something! We know that doing nothing leads to further weakness and stiffness which definably would not be helpful.
There may be arthritis in some joints but rarely in every joint and it’s not in your muscles, so we can start with those areas and progress from there. If you exercise those areas, even if we don’t cure all the problems, at least you are fitter, healthier and can do more!
What if you have tried before and have had problems or just don’t know what to do or how to start?
This can be worrying. A progressive programme is about finding what you can do at the moment and doing things gradually to be able to do more over time.
That’s the physical side, but mentally taking control doing something positive and being determined are all just as important to good wellbeing.
The structure of a rehabilitation programme in NK Active.
At NK Active we have an initial discussion to find out what you already know, ask you if you are concerned about anything and then together we will build a plan that is unique to you and is designed to get you doing more of the things that you want to do.
We will then have 5 rehabilitation sessions with homework because it’s not all about us making you better, it’s about helping you find the confidence to do what you need to do so that you can progress.
Session 1 is for strength and flexibility testing to collect some base data and set goals to work towards. Sessions 2-4 are for reviews of your progress at intervals ranging from 2 weeks to 2 months and depending on what is right for you, your holidays and family commitment – we know you have a life and a prorgeamme has to work with that.
For a programme to be progressive we need 3 things:
- To know where we are (think strength testing) – Do you know where you are and what you can do? How do you know?
- To know what we want to achieve – Do you know what you want to do? Is this realistic?
- Put a plan in place to get you there – What do you think needs to happen to do to get you from where you are to where you want to be?
During the final assessment, we do some retesting to see how much you have changed and set the plan for continuing to move forward.
Courage isn’t always a roar; sometimes it’s a quiet voice at the end of the day saying I’ll try again tomorrow. Amanda Thurow, Fernie, British Columbia
