Verrucas
What are verruca?
Verruca is a form of the human papillomavirus (HPV), that occurs mainly on the soles of the feet and around the toe area, however, can occur anywhere on the body and we call it a wart.
The virus thrives in moist environments, such as, changing room floors. They are contagious through direct person-to-person, for example, by simply walking barefoot across the same floor as someone with a verruca could cause you to contract the virus.
Verrucae are characterised by small ‘cauliflower-like’ growths with tiny centralised black dots, people often think that the black dots are the root, however, these are micro blood vessels.
Can they resolve on their own?
Cases seen in children and teenagers may go away on their own, but more commonly in adults this may take months or even years. Some strains of the virus can spread into small clusters of verrucae and it is possible to have more than one strain at any one time.
