Best shoes for Osteoarthritis in the foot

Osteoarthritis can be a debilitating condition, particularly when it affects the foot. In this episode of the NK active podcast, Nick, lead podiatrist and Clinical Director here at NK active, discusses the importance of choosing the right footwear for individuals with osteoarthritis in the foot. This article delves into the key points covered in the podcast, providing valuable insights into the best shoes for managing osteoarthritis in the foot.

The Significance of Footwear

Footwear plays a crucial role in alleviating the discomfort associated with osteoarthritis. The right pair of shoes can improve mobility and reduce pain. However, it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation, and individual preferences and needs come into play.

Rocker-Based Shoes

Rocker-based shoes are a popular choice for those with osteoarthritis in the foot. These shoes have a sole designed to mimic a natural rocking motion during walking. This design helps reduce the load on the affected joints and can provide substantial relief.

Finding the Perfect Fit

The most critical aspect of selecting appropriate shoes is ensuring a proper fit. Here are some guidelines:

  • Aim for a thumb’s width of space between your big toe and the end of the shoe when standing.
  • Your shoes shouldn’t bulge out to the sides when you’re standing up.
  • Test the fit by removing the shoe lining and standing on it to check for any bulging of the feet over the sides.

Recommended Rocker-Based Shoes for osteoarthritis in the foot

Several brands and models of rocker-based shoes cater to different preferences and budgets. Here are some of the top recommendations:

Saucony Endorphin Range

  • Endorphin Speed: A cost-effective option with a nylon plate and a softer feel.
  • Endorphin Pro: Slightly more expensive, lighter, and equipped with a carbon fiber plate for added stiffness.

Hoka One One

  • Hoka Carbon X: These shoes offer a stiffer ride due to the carbon plate, but some find them harsh.
  • Hoka Bondi: Known for their cushioning and a more comfortable feel.

Altra Footwear

  • Altra Olympus: If you need a wide toe box, this shoe from Altra is worth considering.

The North Face Vective

  • The North Face Vective: Known for their natural rocker, these shoes are an excellent choice for outdoor activities and offer a good fit without prominent seams.

Joya

  • Joya: A more casual option, these shoes have a built-in rocker but may not be everyone’s preferred style.

Gore Rolling Soft

  • Gore Rolling Soft: These shoes, while not technically rocker shoes, mimic the rocker effect due to their sole’s unique design. They’re perfect for a smarter, more casual look.

Customizing Your Shoes

If you have a favorite pair of shoes that don’t come with a rocker sole, you can explore the option of adding a carbon lining retrospectively. This allows you to turn any shoe into a rocker shoe, but be aware that it might not be as effective as shoes designed with rockers from the start.

Conclusion

Selecting the right shoes is a vital part of managing foot osteoarthritis. It’s essential to find a pair that suits your individual needs, preferences, and budget. Remember that shoes are not a cure but a significant component of your overall treatment plan. We hope these recommendations help you make an informed decision about the best shoes for osteoarthritis in the foot.

I purchased shoes Joya Tina 11 from a company called Shoe Med in Canterbury. they have since moved to Stratford on Avon. These shoes were my salvation, so comfortable, but this was 2021. I am desperate to purchase new shoes. sandals, however, I would like to actually try on in a store(I have purchased online from Shoe Med last year) hope you can help, with a store near to where I live.

Hi Moria, I am sorry I dont have any recommendations for shops in canterbury, the closest would be Precious Soles north east london.

However, if you are happy with a trainer, most running shoe shops will have rocker trainers in stock.

      Thanks

      Nick
